I’m surprised so many people in China use VPN just to access ChatGPT still

but what else would be a good main app? the chinese ones are cool and all, but chatgpt is somewhat synonymous with the use of ai ;) 

but i also think most in tech in china use vpn's for everything else anyway

Kinda what I was thinking. Brand recognition is strong. No equivalence to like a t3 chat that aggregates them that’s main stream enoufh

yup. t3 or perplexity are good aggregators (and i have a sub to t3 because there was some good deal where its like $8/mo).

even perplexity, sometimes perplexes people (me included), but it has a niche in some verticals/industries that make it useful.

chatgpt is becoming the new google (term/brand recognition wise)

I should but various projects I do hack on are local on macOS sadly

Claude code is unparalleled but now we have qwen coder which is super new and quite usable. Kimi is browser based. But I reckon alternatives is that Deepseek had the early advantage and best marketing. Alibaba is just not into talking enough about qwen. And Kimi was around before but much smaller team. Deepseek wow’ed even the west which is why it’s the alt (training on the cheap and all that). Suspect the trend will change for qwen. 

Btw - have you just considered an ssh box in the USA, and running Claude code there? I presume all the software you deploy is on Linux anyway, so really there is no need to run it locally on macOS - this is something I’ve been doing for a bit now

I forget sometimes the adoption curve of retail for this. I know Claude has been cracking down on dev stuff wrt China, but I was not expecting to hear deepseek still as the alternative. Tbf qwen and Kimi are still quite new
