i think the biggest reason it is on an "island near singapore" is the fact that malaysia is pretty easy on letting anyone in with almost no visa, and forest city in johor is quite abandoned. see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41_Hs1nl9D8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCttb8M6S0A https://www.bbc.com/news/business-67610677

yes the easy to get a visa is a big part but might be doable in a location in the us timezone as well

agreed. one more thing - both KUL and SIN airports are hugely well connected to the rest of the world. its hard to say of many other places. and the malaysian ringgit is very favourable compared to the singaporean dollar. til re: megahubs, kul beats sin, mostly thanks to low cost carrier airasia! https://www.oag.com/megahubs-airports-2024

I’m curious where the best location in the Americas would be, with an airport highly connected to the rest of the Americas and easy visas for (at least) the Americas. I wonder if there’s some demand for a “new world” network school for those who prefer presence in the Americas for whatever reason.
