"The term "burning" a CD refers to the process of writing data onto a recordable compact disc (CD-R) using a laser in a CD burner or CD-R drive. The reason it's called "burning" is because the laser heats up a special dye layer inside the blank disc, causing a chemical change that creates darkened areas representing the digital data being stored. This process is similar to "burning" in the sense that heat is used to permanently alter the material of the disc, though no actual flames are involved."
