there's just so much trash everywhere, i'm usually not sensitive to it but there's a point where it feels unsanitary and it impacts my enjoyment of just walking

Sounds like depression. It makes me think about those people who do cleanups like this as philanthropic work

Reminds me of the time my gf (now wife) and I lived in Cambridge and Somerville - streets would get super dirty late winter before they ran street sweepers. One block we would walk all the time was particularly bad, so we spent a good part of a Presidents’ Day picking up trash along one or two blocks - multiple big trash bags and enough cigarette butts, Dunkin’ cups, and airplanes to really question society. ‘‘Twas nice waking along that stretch for the next month or so. Good use of our energy and youth.
