Considering doing the RV thing around US - 5 people and a dog. Tell me why this is a good or terrible idea.

Here’s the thing. Idea sounds fun. But want to hear from people who have done it. Need those non-glamorous stories. Super hot in summer, messy all bunked up, bad when someone gets sick. All that stuff to even out my expectations.

With three kids under the age 13 (no dog) we did one month in a minivan combo tent/hotel camping to see the western US. Later bought an RV in NY and road tripped it back to Seattle. Both amazing adventures filled with stories of dealing with the unexpected and seeing beautiful parts of the US. (Worse one was child getting the flu and puking in the mini van for 6 hours before arriving in Yellowstone to tent camp. So we got a hotel that night to do laundry.) The RV trip was much better for the roadtripping part. But recommend towing a small car so you can explore local areas. (We didn't, and I had to parallel park a 33 foot RV close to Niagra falls to see it. πŸ˜‚)
