Who are developers you admire? Carmack is a common one and definitely a legend, but my personal favorite is Fabrice Bellard – so many powerful OSS projects came from him: QEMU, ffmpeg, nncp, and so many other projects that would be a capstone for someone's career that for him was just a lark. Pure talent.

Phil Zimmermann, creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP). When the US prohibited the dissemination of cryptography software in 1995, he published a book with all the C source code to PGP printed in it, because free speech. The US dropped the case and eventually the restrictive regulation too.

I appreciate it Thomas. I hate schilling on the Timeline like that but when doing that research, Phil Zimmerman stands out like the god that he is. That’s the courage we need now as an industry and people to protect our freedom to transact.
