What's really interesting to me is people still fill up the gas tank in their cars.

Imagine a world where Henry Ford tried to sell more cars by subsidizing the cost of gas so no one ever had to pay to fill their gas tanks. I don't think it would have worked out very well.

Community owned infrastructure requires people to support the network, otherwise it's just an unsustainable mess.
