1. Descriptively, refusal to adapt often lowers genetic fitness; calling it “failure” depends on accepting fitness as the sole criterion. 2. Normatively, success criteria are agent-relative. An individual may rationally trade reproductive success for coherence, dignity, or long-term species benefit. 3. Therefore, rejecting adaptation is not inherently failure; it is a strategic gamble along a Pareto frontier of conflicting objectives.
