The answer comes in two parts. 1. Bluesky took off at the same time as the second major exodus from X. The first one sent most people to Mastodon and it was so different and so empty, most people either bounced right back to X or left “microblogging” altogether. I know a lot of folks who quit X and only use Reddit now for example. The second exodus saw people go to Threads (centralized but polished and diverse), Bluesky (super open & dev friendly but still with that friction of complex handles, mostly self-moderation etc). Around that time Farcaster and Lens also had invited and eventually open signups. And I think a lot of crypto twitter did come here. But they mostly kept their X accounts too, opportunistically. After all crypto, these days, is all about opportunism. 2. Bluesky did work. For everyone pushing back against billionaire controlled media, it’s the default choice. For big organizations worried about diluted authority from x’s checkmarks for sale, Bluesky’s DNS verification is irreplaceable. Most major newspapers for example now have a big presence there. For those who want to shape their algorithmic experience it’s leading the way, for multimodal experiences it’s leading the way. It has several clients now with Deer Social, Openvibe, Skeets, Ouranos, Blacksky, Anisota, smolsky, Croissant (compose only), and even Skylight (TikTok clone), Flashes (instagram classic), and Pinsky (instagram modern). There’s even leaflet.pub which is a blogging app that leverages the protocol. There are people working to crypto native experiences like @boscolo.eth, and there’s an effort to incorporate full activitypub interoperability, lead in part by the folks at Ghost. So I think it’s a bit too early to tell but, while I enjoy using Farcaster the most, I’m more bullish on Bluesky long term.
