currencies are intermediaries.

No one says I want more currency (dollar, euro, gold, ...).

They want what that currency allows them to have/do.

In the end all it boils down to is the ability to exchange, to trade. 

We're still in a peer to peer exchange economic system

I'd argue that calling what we have a peer to peer exchange system is a big stretch.

With "money" we have added ability to transcend time and ability to accumulate ad-infinitum without any ties to utility. 
Maybe good, maybe bad but that's the fact. 
This is not peer to peer economy -- this is peer to exchange economy.

Also saving in gold is available for thousands of years so not sure what your making out to be new ? 

And even gold or any currency is only used to be exchanged ? So how come it’s not peer to peer (actor to actor) exchange model?
