One of the really sad things about getting older and watching current events is that you come to realize that things won’t improve in your lifetime. All of the dreams of a better, fairer world you’ve had for years don’t have enough time to come to pass before your time is up.

This has me melancholy today.

Real talk. Well said, but this hits hard because youthful idealism dies a hard and painful death.

Just stick with idealism 🙌🤩 it’s pretty much as valid world view as any other option and makes your days better

In theory it sounds good, but it's hard to sustain once you know more about how the world actually works (as opposed to how some of us once thought it worked).

But I'll admit that my views have been shaped by the fact that I grew up in the US with the American "suffer with a smile" norms. I hate that stuff.

Eh, I dunno... I'm wary of the toxic blind optimism I often see. It gives me the creeps. I don't think that worldview is as valid as it likes to think it is. It's a type of denial at best.

But I do think there's some sort of tempered approach that can take the place of youthful idealism. That's the path I'm trying to navigate, anyway.
