Certainly a bit of a provocation, this. But then I looked at the replies and I see the nuance. 
Some are. Some aren't. Some are sometimes and other times not.

yeah i mean ofc many artists *have* taste but the *job* of an artist is absolutely not to be a 'tastemaker' imo.

Agree. Absolutely. It's not the job. But sometimes, especially those artists who live and create on the fringes, become tastemakers because people like their new style or paradigm.

But, to me that means that tastemaking is not the job but an unintended outcome of their work.
