whenever i've tried to discuss the tech with ppl i know (also left-leaning), they get very defensive bc it challenges/potentially threatens the illusion of security they feel with the status quo (that they also complain about.) so the response is to point at the ponzis and the enviro as a way to shut the convo down

I think some of it is also the far right element of certain crypto communities (usually from Bitcoin maxis) that tends to make the headlines. Elizabeth Warren's misinformation doesn't help either...

yeah it's the horseshoe theory with how the gen x left actually shares more in common with the libertarian right of today in terms of anti-globalist, anti-mainstream, etc. it's kind of a mess (maybe intentionally so) to frame things as oppositional sides and clouds ppls judgment on so many things
