Another fun food fact is that the most popular brand of instant noodles in Ukraine was started by a Vietnamese man, who is now the richest person in Vietnam. Phạm Nhật Vượng had been sent to the Soviet Union to study geological prospecting. After graduating, he moved to Kharkiv, Ukraine where he started an instant noodle business called Mivina. He sold Mivina to Nestlé and used the money to get into real estate back in Vietnam. From this, he grew a private conglomerate, Vingroup, which you’ll see everywhere in Vietnam across multiple verticals. In California, we already have their cars (Vinfast) on the roads. Interestingly, Vietnamese people I meet are very aware of this story. But Ukrainians I meet are often surprised to learn the origin of their favorite instant noodles.

Piquantly similar fun food fact is that the most popular brand of instant noodles in Poland was started by a Vietnamese man, who had been sent to study marine engineering, but seems like he just settled for being an ordinary rich man in Poland.
