is the vision pro headset less harsh on the eyes than an average external monitor? i am thinking, can i increase my screen time by using vision pro without the adverse effects of screens, such as loss of sleep, etc?

The answer at the moment is no. I get dry eyes much faster in the vision pro. Realistically, this won't be a viable everyday consumer device until a generation or two down the road.

My intuition is it’s worse than a normal monitor/phone.

Not harsh on the eyes but the field of view, distortion on the sides, and weight makes is not as comfortable as a screen. If you are at home use a screen, if you are on the go use Vision Pro.
