human brains are more tuned to frequency than to scale -- it's biology -- but we have invented record-keeping, math, notation, and transformations (e.g., linear vs log scale).
I think about this often. Man had to invent double-entry accounting. In the age when long-distance trade was the specialty of a few ethnic groups, their ability to math better was a huge and compounding advantage.
