these songs all made my mind go WHAT IS THAT on the first listen. How/why? I think all criteria have to be there: - distictive voice - novel musicality (grunge guitar, vocal slide, trumpets where they don't belong, etc.) - an extreme subject matter - listener is age 14-25, or, going through something Contrast with someone like Bruno Mars, who has all the vocal tools, the catchiest hooks, and I listen to over and over probaby 100x anyone on this list, yet I consider to be derivative and merely enjoyable.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – The Face of Love Bob Dylan – Girl of the North Country Eric Clapton – Tears in Heaven Johnny Cash – Hurt Nine Inch Nails – Hurt These are so πŸ”₯ love when ppl share gems I haven’t heard before. I also feel like we don’t talk enough about the little details and subtle things that make ppl really connect with certain songs. PS: Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio (RIP) is easily one of the most recognizable songs imo. His voice was so distinct. I remember the vocals way more than the beat
