Taiwan - volcanic soils and lush climate where everything just grows - history of Dutch trade, Japanese colonization and pan-China immigration (primarily but not just Fujian) - a culture of innovation+science 2. poor climate (emphasis on cabbage, pickles, spiced meat), dominated by neighbors: Korea or Romania
