am i wrong to think that GCP Cloud SQL absolutely should not cost $254/month for the base instance type? this seems wildly expensive

Yeah gcp is way too expensive for dbs. Take a look at fly.io, less managed but more reasonably priced. I migrated there from gcp

Didn't know about neon! I remember looking at render as well, I think fly is a bit cheaper

Actually I remember neon, the issue I had was that their pricing model makes it very difficult to compare with competitors that. They should show at least a monthly amounts for standard setups to make it easier.
