Gatekeeping on channels needs to go away. Becoming a member of channels should be easy. That itself will solve the cold start problem to a large extent.

Cura makes that easy. For example: https://cura.network/aichannel/details And if channels want membership rules, cura also gives them the ability to set up auto-invite rules so folks can join smoothly.
