Could you just convert mid life and qualify?

i'm far from an expert (as well as a terrible catholic) but i think you need to at least be a bishop, which is not easy to attain 

so you certainly can convert at any time, but i think the experience part will be the major barrier 👀

Technically any catholic male qualifies, though in practice bishops vote for one of their own.

And you don’t need to be born catholic — technically no one ever is, after all. A person can get baptized later in life
