Heard people here are talking about ChatGPT in college, here’s some firsthand experience after my first year at UW Madison 

- personally I use it a lot for defining terms and explaining concepts 
- I use it to check my essays and improve them, and sometimes provide me with an outline before writing

First hand experience about chatgpt in universities from a current college student

I’m a japanese studies student and I’ve been using it almost daily.

– I use it to summarize complex texts by uploading the readings I’ve already read and highlighted, and I ask ChatGPT to focus on what I marked.
– I use it to structure essays and review my writing.
– I also use it to explore thoughts I’ve been having and see how they might connect to the assignment. It’s a way to turn ongoing reflections into something I can actually integrate into my work.

Sounds like a good use. Are your peers using it to “do” their work for them to short cut to getting good grades without learning or comprehension?

Yeah, totally! My professors usually start the semester with a simple essay to get a sense of your writing style and skill.

I think it’s mostly to track your development throughout the course, but is something to have in mind if you want to cheat, lol.

That’s close to something  @alexshul.eth told me too- that professors can spot the use of ChatGPT if students try to use it to flat out write an entire essay for them

I don’t know, tbh. But most students aren’t tech-savvy enough to use Chatgpt regularly. And since these are social studies, answering certain questions takes a decent amount of reflection, which I think, a not-too-lazy teacher could recognize through someone’s writing style if they’re cheating or not.
