Is this true? Maybe the small beautiful personal projects just move on to other venues, funding sources, distribution channels. It’s cheaper than ever to make a feature length film, and easier than ever to deliver it direct to viewers. Niche curation is at ATH.

I agree it’s hard for an indie project to break through to the mainstream. But I don’t see them directly competing with Marvel in the way you describe. Am I off the mark?

The truth probably splits is that smartphones have created a tech-savvy but media-illiterate generation that can operate the tools but doesn’t understand metalanguages (all the cues that don’t require dialogue or exposition) That media illiteracy is probably a greater barrier to quality filmmaking than any equipment costs ever were.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Absolutely true. Media literacy is essential for appreciating deeper layers of storytelling. Smartphones have made content creation accessible but critical viewing skills are just as important.
