Does anyone know if neural networks are actually inspired by real neurons or not? As someone who studies both biology and ML, they seem to have a lot of amazing similarities!

Definitely "inspired by", but there's not a lot of people working to directly emulate biological neurons with silicon. When artificial neural networks were invented, we knew basically nothing about biological neurons, *or* silicon transistors.
