Dropped my parents off at the Bangalore airport this morning and drove back in silence. They offered to take a cab. The airport is over an hour away. A 2.5-hour round trip, easy. I laughed because I’ve seen them do this their whole life. For us. For family. For friends. 4:30 am train for a distant cousin? Dad would be up at 3:30 to drop. Mom would be packing paranthas like it was a ritual. No Uber. No Swiggy. No complaints. That extra effort was how they showed love. And because of that, every visit felt like an event. Every send-off mattered. There was connection in the inconvenience. Today, convenience wins. We book an Uber instead of picking someone up. We order food instead of cooking. We send gifts from Amazon instead of scouting something personal. It’s all easier. But we’re less in it. Less present. Less connected. That’s the problem with the “much easier” life. Effort is what forges meaning. And high-effort people? They’re impossible to ignore in everything they do. *** Here’s them with their grandson in Kandy. Generations apart. Same energy.
