Emojis and memes can be viewed as English evolving into being a more pictographic language. One recent development I've been noticing is that we now even have chengyu.
Chengyu in Chinese are usually sequences of four Chinese characters that have a much more complex deep meaning, because they point to a well-known story.
Today in English twitter, we see the picture of a leopard below. This is a reference to a tweet from 2015 ( https://x.com/Cavalorn/status/654934442549620736 ) saying:
> 'I never thought leopards would eat MY face,' sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party.
This tweet has become a famous meme and is commonly used to talk about the situation of someone voting for or supporting some aggressive group because they think that they won't be the target, and turning out wrong. It's so famous that to make a pointer to the situation, today, you just have to show a picture of a threatening-looking leopard.
