airgap started as a product.
it’s becoming a protocol.
over the coming weeks we’ll begin rolling out that transition, step by step.
the hosted webapp at airgap.finance will remain online until the remaining free inference has been consumed.
after that, our focus shifts entirely to publishing a polished v1 of the open source repository.
from there, we start building in the open.
the goal is simple:
airgap should no longer depend on us.
it should belong to everyone willing to build it.
that also means the economics evolve.
instead of protocol fees funding free inference, they’ll fund the people improving the protocol itself.
we’re designing a dao where contributors earn a share of protocol revenue based on meaningful contributions to the project.
build the software.
improve the network.
share in the value you create.
that’s a far more sustainable model than asking one developer to shoulder everything while hoping attention eventually catches up.
we tried scaling by shipping faster.
what airgap actually needed was more builders.
the code will be free.
the software will run locally.
the network will be community-owned.
governance will be shared.
and development won’t stop when one person needs sleep.
we’re also building a free llm gateway for basic models that contributors will be able to use while building on airgap.
gappy isn’t going anywhere either.
it started as an experiment in autonomous promotion through the clanker ecosystem, and that’s exactly what it will remain.
we’ll update its knowledge as airgap evolves, but we’ll let it continue doing what it was built to do: operate autonomously.
this transition won’t happen overnight.
rewriting software is easy.
rewriting ownership is not.
but if we’re going to build infrastructure that deserves the name airgap, this is the only direction that makes sense.
less chasing validation.
more code.
more builders.
more ownership.
more airgap.
