Been meaning to expand on this, so here goes. My beef with passkey UX (and surprise, it's not really an issue with the technology itself).
- It's sometimes _really easy_ to make a new account when a product asks you to sign in with a passkey. Wallets have been notorious for this. Maybe counterintuitive, but I think creating an account should have some friction. This is an issue with social sign in too.
- Unclear where they live. If you use a password manager, it's more clear, but otherwise I have no idea where the passkey is being stored. My Apple account? My Google account? Who is managing this stuff.
- Related to ^, it's unclear if they're portable. If I make an account on my phone, can I use it on my laptop? This stuff should be obvious, this is way too important of a feature to be so confusing.
- Random, unprompted requests to store passkeys. Seriously, what the fuck is this. I log into Amazon and 1password asks me to save a passkey, then Chrome asks me to save a passkey, then Apple asks me to save a passkey. I _think_ this is Amazon doing something weird in this case, but it just adds to my animosity towards passkeys.
