This album was written to foster contemplation around Good Friday, "[c]omplementing the beautiful visual history that surrounds the "Stations of the Cross" tradition." It's appropriately somber, haunting, and challenging. https://www.poorbishophooper.com/projects/golgotha https://open.spotify.com/album/18sQeC99NhI2Ye55ARM0W8?si=UBJbbgoQTGKdPn_7vnUyMw

The strange familiarity of a place you’ve never been. When I was a kid, my dad worked in a handful of ski shops. Though it had been many years since I had stepped foot into one, this rental area tapped a reservoir of memories I had long forgotten about. The smells & sounds, worn wood countertops, banners, satisfying clicks of a good fit between boot and binding, neatly organized racks of gear. I’m bummed I didn’t get a good photo of the shop. (Unrelated: the tech could have been Jurgen Klopp’s younger brother.) That was even better: chunks of wax, hot irons, shaving steel…was tempted to ask if I could step up to the bench myself.

Since I was a kid, I've enjoyed watching skiing videos, be they extreme, racing, powder, bloopers, whatever. Now, I'm watching skiing videos of my kids.

Spent the week at a small ski area in western Colorado called Powderhorn*. A smattering of ruminations: It was the kids’s first time on the slopes (long story). Having ski culture as my family lore (dad worked in ski shops when I was a kid, etc.), this was very, very long overdue. When you deeply enjoy something and want your kids to enjoy it too, you can’t force them into it. It's kind of like tip-toeing towards the thing. Thankfully, all of them absolutely loved it. “I can’t believe you’ve been holding back on us like this.” “Yeah, I think we need to move here.” Warmed my heart. ••• Sure, the snow wasn’t great, but it was more than enough: "Not what we have, but what we enjoy, constitutes our abundance.” In fact, the longer we were there, the more I was (selfishly) glad for the conditions: with a lack of crowds, the kids had more room to learn and move and explore; multiple runs all to myself; the privilege of fresh corduroy; bluebird days, sunburns, & t-shirts — are you kidding me? The image of Boris Yeltsin at the Texas grocery store kept coming to mind: when the bar is really low, even "sub-par" is impressive. ••• This was our first time here, but in many ways, we found this place represents the best of ski areas: friendly staff, great terrain, good vibes, local friendly, here for the love of the game. And I’d put their fried cheese curds up against anyone’s. ••• Thankful. ••• *They have a free(!) learn to ski/ride program: free lessons, rentals, and lift ticket for up to three days. Bananas value, and there’s no way we could’ve done this otherwise.

My mom’s brothers and their families came into town for her birthday. As a kid, my sister and I were the only grandkids in the family for 10 years, so I hung out with these adults quite a bit, but not really their kids. Other than briefly at a wedding last year, I haven’t seen these people since I left for college. I moved away, then they moved away, and life gets in the way. Turns out, they are really, really cool. The kind of people that are supremely easy to hang out with for hours. Thankful.
