Spent the week at a small ski area in western Colorado called Powderhorn*. A smattering of ruminations:
It was the kids’s first time on the slopes (long story). Having ski culture as my family lore (dad worked in ski shops when I was a kid, etc.), this was very, very long overdue.
When you deeply enjoy something and want your kids to enjoy it too, you can’t force them into it. It's kind of like tip-toeing towards the thing.
Thankfully, all of them absolutely loved it.
“I can’t believe you’ve been holding back on us like this.”
“Yeah, I think we need to move here.”
Warmed my heart.

Sure, the snow wasn’t great, but it was more than enough: "Not what we have, but what we enjoy, constitutes our abundance.” In fact, the longer we were there, the more I was (selfishly) glad for the conditions: with a lack of crowds, the kids had more room to learn and move and explore; multiple runs all to myself; the privilege of fresh corduroy; bluebird days, sunburns, & t-shirts — are you kidding me?
The image of Boris Yeltsin at the Texas grocery store kept coming to mind: when the bar is really low, even "sub-par" is impressive.

This was our first time here, but in many ways, we found this place represents the best of ski areas: friendly staff, great terrain, good vibes, local friendly, here for the love of the game. And I’d put their fried cheese curds up against anyone’s.

Thankful.

*They have a free(!) learn to ski/ride program: free lessons, rentals, and lift ticket for up to three days. Bananas value, and there’s no way we could’ve done this otherwise.
