Vulnerability is a hard ground to stand on. You have to balance the externals while still holding soft hands for yourself within it. It is one of those emotional terrains that demands a filigree of delicate participation. The edges between too much and too little are so subtle, so whisper-tuned, that missteps are inevitable. Out of self-preservation, many choose to err on the side of caution, closing themselves off and growing thorns.
But what is this self we are so eager to protect? Perhaps it is the tender rosebud - fragile, yes, yet also the promise of full blossom, a plant that returns faithfully with the rhythm of seasons.
In Sufi poetry, the rose often symbolizes our soul’s yearning and the ache of being alive. And maybe that’s exactly what the call to be vulnerable leads us to: more aliveness, a deeper capacity to experience this mysterious existence and our response to it. It becomes a step-by-step ladder of our growth into the fullness of Self - not through isolation, but through the courage of making ourselves visible to others.
Perhaps this is our soul’s deepest yearning, the healing we seek.
