And it’s because these platforms launched with talking points that acknowledged how unfair and broken these mechanics are for artists (but really anyone building an audience). It’s not possible for me to exist in a space peacefully, let alone bullish or excited. When I’m witnessing the same behavior of no one else I thought was trying to create a better future and more fair & un manipulated version of the internet is willing to jeopardize there own bags by acknowledging hey maybe we hold off on trying to lure new people into something based on the hype of being able to earn for your posts, until we expect the bare minimum users being able to own their attention & be able to rely on the ability to see who they follow & have no doubts they will reach the audience they built. Cus without that, it’s just another broken system that doesn’t reward your time and energy based on your time and energy. It’s just another performative popularity contest, and it can’t not be that. That’s just how humans keep optimizing & engaging with systems that justify removing being able to rely on democracy of the meaningful follower. [part 10]

sound was the first to quickly pivot to marketing as a better system than existing broken ones, then recreated the same rigged & unhealthy system with leaderboards & purposely obstructing democracy & agency of choice killing organic discovery to drive attention to a few, those benefiting really showed their colors by attacking & gaslighting anyone who cared about things bigger than their own success & since the reality is, this space is small, more founders and builders than real human consumers and collectors. Trying to do the right thing for bigger picture of healthy and fair ecosystem put a stigma on the ones with good intentions, & created an environment where other artists didn’t want to be in bad graces with the hands that may feed them in the future so not only did they not rally behind the ones who were ultimately sticking up for them, but basically stopped acknowledging them. Since pivoting to web3, if the litmus to gauge success & value are based on the money we’ve made in this space. I’ve made more in 3 years most artists will realistically make in 20 years. Am I allowed to grateful, while also be unsatisfied because the mechanic that breaks the artist experience that drove me here in the first place, was slowly placed back into the platforms that exist today because they were successful at marketing to artists in mission statements that acknowledged those broken mechanics & aimed to solve [part 8]

If I wasn’t an artist I wouldn’t have an intimate understanding & appreciation of the path of investment & sacrifice that happens long before the consumer gets to experience the results of that path. It’s why I collect culture ferociously. So I know the one mechanic that breaks & undermines all of investment. [part 7]

As someone just posting on the internet, or an “influencer “ There isn’t the same level of upfront cost as artists/creators so losing the guarantee that your investment of time spent building an audience you will reach does’t have the extra layers of investment that artists creators make prior to even getting to that place where building an audience even makes sense. If I wasn’t an artist, I wouldn’t be on social anyways. But as an artist (creator) I’m way way too conscious that the thing that drove creators away from web2, wasn’t not being able to earn from posts, it’s because losing the meaningful follower broke the ability to trust the results of your effort. That trickles down to income eventually but wasn’t / isn’t the root problem [part 5]

The ability to earn money from what you post is something a lot of people would rally behind. But when you tamper with the entire purpose of a social platform, and refuse to acknowledge that the only reason to resist allowing a feed absent of any external curation is to control the distribution. Earn is tainted. [part 4]

It’s not rocket science, if there is doubt or RNG mechanics in place between the feature of knowing what you share will definitely reach your audience. It removes accountability of success or lack there of from the users. There is no feature or incentive that matters without being able to trust the distribution of attention [part 3]

It’s so simple to implement feeds that only show what your follows post. It’s such a simple ask, it makes sense. It is the ultimate form of a fair market. Once you remove the guarantee to see who you follow, without added distraction, you remove the ability to say you advocate for artists. [part 2]

I’m ultra fatigued with the concept & identity of being artist, especially one w/ a long history. Remove the artist, and the pressure of solving, caring about things that break artists ability to have meaningful impact dissolve. It’s such a simple solve to implement yet all platforms refuse. Protect the past to protect the future then protect peace and productivity by protecting attention by detaching from anything built designed to not honor the value of being still in the present.
