this is a good question. and it's actually an intentional incentive design choice. the natural behavior in a game like this is that most pack purchases happen late, when the word pool has shrunk and confidence is high. if we didn’t counterbalance that, rounds would be slow and underfunded. so part of the prize pool (10%) is reserved to reward heavy early participation, even if those guesses don’t solve the word. that does two things: - it incentivizes players to buy packs and guess early - purchases help grow the prize pool from the very start of the round in other words, the top 10 early guessers are rewarded for risk and momentum. as the round progresses, incentives naturally shift and paid guesses will likely increase. that's why the *price* of paid guesses increases as well: - 0–749 total guesses (early round): 0.00030 ETH - 750–1249 guesses (late round): 0.00045 ETH - 1250+ guesses (late round, max): 0.00060 ETH if your odds of finding the word are higher (because fewer words are eligible), the cost of paid guesses is also higher. this design will hopefully keep the game active and prize pools healthy in every round.
