This will probably be my most contentious opinion of all: FUCK THE OLYMPICS.
The Olympics foster nationalism, legitimize actual fascists and imperialists, and (financially and culturally) bankrupt the cities that hold them.
The Olympics allow fascist led countries to compete:
Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Pinochet, Franco, every Apartheid South African leader, Trump, Putin, Orbán, Nettenyahu. Ethnonationalists, on the same stage as the people they victimize. A signal to the vulnerable, that the world does not care.
What’s more? Juan Antonio Samaranch, who served as IOC President from 1980-2001 (21 fucking years), was himself a Spanish fascist who served as Franco’s minister of sports under the fascist dictatorship.
tl;dr by fascists for fascists, the Olympics is the blatant commodification of nationalism and a distraction intended to quell the necessary anger of the public in a moment when we need it more than ever.
