Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, said this about personal libraries:
The idea that you must read every book you buy is completely irrational—just as criticizing people who buy more books than they could ever read is meaningless. It’s like saying you must use every fork, pair of glasses, screwdriver, or drill you own before buying a new one.
In life, there are things we need to always have plenty of, even if we only use a small part of them.
If we think of books as medicine, we realize it’s better to have a lot of them at home rather than just a few: when we’re feeling unwell, we go to the “medicine shelf” and pick a book. A random one—but the right one for that moment.
That’s why you should always have a rich selection available!
People who buy only one book, read just that one, and then get rid of it are basically applying a consumerist mindset to books—treating them like disposable goods. But people who truly love books know that a book can be anything except a simple commodity.
