Aerobag, a cycling airbag system, has just been named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2026. The idea looks simple, it is to detect a crash and deploy an airbag to help protect the rider. Cyclocross today’s stop was Meulebeke, Belgium. New victory for 🇧🇪 Michael Vanthourenhout who took the men’s race on the final-lap. His fourth victory at the Berencross. 🇱🇺 Marie Schreiber won the women’s race, holding off Aniek van Alphen, with Lucinda Brand completing the podium. One of the day’s biggest talking points was Fem van Empel’s return after almost a year away from racing. The three-time world champion finished fourth, just five seconds off the podium. Oh, by the way… cyclocross season is back! 😅 There's so much cycling going on at the moment that I almost forgot one of my favourite disciplines. 🇧🇪 Michael Vanthourenhout took the men's race, while 🇳🇱 Lucinda Brand won the women's. There is a bit of history in the Belgian season opener in Dendermonde... yes, the winners got something a little different from the usual trophy… 100kg of mussels. Each. That's the prize for the men's and women's winners at the Mosselcross in Dendermonde! This isn't some centuries-old cyclocross tradition. The prize is part of the identity of the Borremans Mosselcross, named after its fishmonger sponsor. And the best part? The winners don't have to figure out what to do with 100kg of mussels themselves. They're meant to give them to their supporters' clubs, who can organise a meal and raise some money. Tomorrow, the 2026 Track World Championships begin in Shanghai. Track cycling is a discipline I like and have followed since watching it at the Olympics back in the 2000s, when the Spaniard Joan Llaneras was one of the riders who caught my attention. The Netherlands, Great Britain and Australia are among the main favorites, but there are plenty of other countries with strong riders in specific events, including Colombia, Italy, Mexico, Denmark and Japan. Five days plenty of racing and 22 rainbow jerseys up for grabs. Also, the official banner caught my eye. Love the illustration, especially the way it brings the track and Shanghai's skyline together. Would be curious to know who designed it and the story behind it. Anyone has a tip?

Eyes on Il Lombardia 🇮🇹 The final Monument of the season for road cycling, and for the first time in five years, no Pogačar at the start, which means, someone else win the Race of the Falling Leaves. Five straight victories have made Lombardia almost feel like Pogačar’s race. Not this time. The 120th edition goes from Bergamo to Como over 239km, with almost 4,700m of climbing. Madonna del Ghisallo is back, and the final kilometres will be brutal, with Civiglio and two climbs of San Fermo della Battaglia before the finish in Como. And the start list? 🇺🇸 Brandon McNulty 🇲🇽 Isaac del Toro 🇫🇷 Paul Seixas 🇧🇪 Remco Evenepoel 🇬🇧 Tom Pidcock 🇺🇸 Matteo Jorgenson 🇮🇹 Giulio Ciccone… A lot of the names we saw fighting at the Worlds are back for one final big battle. Let’s see who takes the last Monument of the year 🍂

Gravel Worlds in Australia! I have no idea what this race is going to look like. I’ll just wake up at 4 am to watch it and figure it out 😅 Really curious... Gravel has been growing like crazy in the cycling market, with more bikes, more races and more riders getting into it every year. But at the very top of the UCI, it still feels like it is trying to find its place. This is only the fifth edition of the Worlds, and the first one outside Europe. Some riders are even having to fund their own travel and equipment to get to Australia 🤯 About the racing itself… it has little to do with any other race or discipline on paper. Road pros, gravel specialists (if there is such a thing), different teams, different loyalties… and probably some very strange tactics.

One week after Montréal, 🇳🇱Deminator did it again. Vollering is now both World and European Champion. She attacked on the final climb, and from there, the victory was decided. 🇳🇱 Puck Pieterse took silver, with 🇨🇭 Marlen Reusser completing the podium in bronze. Earlier in the day, 🇳🇴 Elias Dybing claimed the Junior Men’s title with a solo move on the final climb, finishing ahead of 🇪🇸 Aitor Martínez and 🇳🇱 Jop van den Biggelaar. Now, attention turns to the Junior Women and Elite Men. 🇧🇪 Remco Evenepoel starts as the big favourite, but home rider 🇸🇮 Primož Roglič will have the crowd behind him… or maybe another surprise like McNulty’s at the Worlds, and someone else from the second row, is getting the European jersey. Another week of national team racing begins. 🇪🇺 After everything we saw at the World Championships in Montréal, the European Road Championships are already on the go in Slovenia. I’m really curious to see what this peloton brings to these Europeans after the level some of these riders showed at the Worlds. One great race has already given us the first European jersey! 🇨🇭 Mara Winter surprised the favorites in today’s Women’s U23 Road Race, taking the title ahead of 🇳🇱 Nienke Vinke and 🇸🇰 Viktória Chladoňová. Mara had already shown at the Worlds that she was in great shape with her fourth place, and today she confirmed it with the European title. The Men’s U23 Road Race has already started too. One more week of pro-cycling racing ahead! ✌️ From today, Montréal becomes the home of the Road Cycling World Championships. Starting with the elite individual time trials, both women’s and men’s. 39.9 km against the clock for both races. On paper, Marlen Reusser is the big favourite in the women’s race, while Remco Evenepoel is once again the man to beat in the men’s. There are plenty of contenders and big names too, like Demi Vollering and Filippo Ganna, though, and I’d love to see these Worlds start with a big surprise…😬 Photos by Yoan Valat and Imago

Eyes off La Vuelta 🇪🇸 A journey from Monaco to Granada. The hardest and hilliest route I can remember, and the Spanish heat that shaped and affected everyone during the race. So many stories and moments to remember. From Pogačar’s incredible form at the start to the cruel luck of his crash. That iconic hailstorm a few days earlier, which gave us one of those stories that only cycling can create. From the resurgence of old rockers like Landa, Dunbar and Küng to the discovery of new talents like Omrzel and Onley, and seeing the dreams of Tobias Halland Johannessen and Marco Brenner become reality with their stage wins. Roglič and Gall giving everything to fight for the podium. Carapaz and Kuss refusing to give up. Wout van Aert and Matthew Brennan turning Visma into a stage-winning machine. And Enric Mas. Eyes on La Vuelta 🇪🇸 Stage 21… But before getting into today, I have to talk about yesterday… It was epic! I just mentioned “La Vuelta for dreamers” in my previous post, and yesterday we had quite a few of them. Starting with the full Uno-X team moving as a block to create the breakaway of the day. Then came Sepp Kuss and his Visma teammates, helping him move up six places and into top 5 of the GC. Only rider in 2026 doing Giro, Tour and Vuelta. Carapaz was another dreamer, who tried and tried and tried with everything he had. But maybe no one embodied that feeling better yesterday than Mikel Landa. Over the years, his fans have created something almost bigger than the results themselves: Landismo. A “movement” built on faith in this rider whose career has been full of ups and downs, and whose story somehow makes people feel everything with him. He won an absolute monster of a stage, crossing the finish line in tears. Yesterday, Landa finally got his reward. Photo by Getty Images

Eyes on La Vuelta 🇪🇸 Stage 20… Queen stage in Sierra Nevada today! This has to be the day. If something is going to happen to turn up the excitement at the top of the GC, it has to be today. Four hard climbs before the final HC ascent to Collado del Alguacil… almost 5,000 metres of elevation gain; this is so brutal that I expect the peloton to split into multiple groups from the very beginning. There will be the dreamers looking for the breakaway. After Dunbar’s win yesterday, I read a comment about how this Vuelta has become a race for breakaway hunters, and I really liked that way of putting it: “La Vuelta for dreamers.” There will also be the GC teams looking for their tactical moves. So, today I have the feeling we’re going to see things happening all over the race at the same time. If only the strongest make it to the finish… Mas takes the stage too, just to leave absolutely no doubts about who deserves to win this Vuelta. Five hours of pure cycling ahead! Photo by Miguel Ena

Eyes on La Vuelta 🇪🇸 Stage 19 live… Starting with the big takeaway from yesterday: Roglič didn’t take a huge amount of time out of Mas in the TT. Quite the opposite for Gall, who lost second place to Primož. Stefan Küng won the TT, job done and then, headed straight to Canada to start preparing for the World Championships in Montréal in a couple of weeks, but I’ll come back to that once these final days of La Vuelta are over 😅🤓, because there is still plenty to watch here. Today, we’re back in the mountains. The stage is already underway and the fight for the breakaway is on. 210 km, almost 4,200 metres of elevation gain and the climb to Peñas Blancas waiting at the end. For Mas, the plan looks quite simple now: stay on Roglič’s wheel for the final three stages and make him take the risks. If Primož wants to win this Vuelta, he has to make something happen.
