Did you know that in the 1920s, a small town in Italy declared war on the Kingdom of Yugoslavia? This peculiar event occurred when the town of Fiume, now known as Rijeka in Croatia, became a self-proclaimed free state under the leadership of the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. D'Annunzio, with his audacious spirit and flair for the dramatic, led this charge as part of his short-lived rule from 1919 to 1920.
