My 4yo and I are about halfway through How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. We’re doing it because: 1. He likes it. 2. It’s working. 3. I used to be a teacher and feel very comfortable using it. If any of those weren’t true, I’d probably be looking hard at https://www.mentava.com/ Their teaching methods are inspired by the 100 Easy Lessons approach: Direct Instruction, augmented by an Orton-Gillingham-style multisensory approach. I also think they put technology and humans in the right roles. Software can reliably run the parts of a lesson that can be designed upfront. But they pair customers with an expert coach that can help with the high-context parts. $500/month for just software is a hard sell, but a good deal for the outcome of quickly learning how to read. They also seem unusually focused on results. I’ve seen their CEO point people toward other resources when Mentava is not the right fit, and their site does something similar.
