I agree, this was always a bit stupid narrative to push when promoting web3 games. The only thing where this might be beneficial (IMO) is to re-assure the longevity of the in-game items. i.e. we have NFT primitives that allow you to add multiple context-aware assets, so for example 2D sprite, 3D model, etc. All on one NFT. This can potentially help in a niche case where the ecosystem has multiple games in different style so you can use the same character in 2d side scroller as well as 3D 3rd person sim/shooter. But again, this is very very niche use case

Yeah i've been thinking of this lately. Specifically that there's a trend now to abstract the blockchain parts as much as possible, to accomodate non web3 native player onboarding. But I came to conclusion that web3 games should embrace blockchain instead of making it completly hidden. I am very intrigued by what EVE Awakening is doing here, which is a very impressive from tech POV and at the same time it will not get in a way to players who don't care about it
