Perlite, trust me when I say it works. It improves drainage and it actually helps with moisture retention. Besides that, it helps with aeration in a soil mix. Soil mixes with peat moss and coco coir can have a lot of soil compaction, and without perlite or a material for this, roots don't get a lot of oxygen.
