There has not been an era of mass migration for 100 years. Open borders ended in the 1920s.
Nonetheless, the US has benefited from cheap foreign labor since then, largely illegal labor. Businessmen like Trump want some amount of illegal labor. They are never prosecuted for employing illegal labor.
The increased pressure to deport illegals is wrecking many economies, with Nebraska being a prime example, and farmers everywhere suffering. Trump and the GOP like some measure of illegal labor.
The closing of borders for lawful entrants has a negative effect on the economy.
