Data Privacy Alert in Europe

Germany’s data protection commissioner has officially reported Chinese AI app DeepSeek to Apple and Google, urging its removal from their app stores. The reason? Alleged illegal transfer of user data to China without proper EU safeguards.

Meike Kamp, Berlin’s data protection chief, stated DeepSeek failed to prove it protects user data in line with GDPR. Chinese law’s broad access to personal data further raises red flags.

Germany follows Italy, which banned the app earlier this year over similar privacy concerns.

The question now: Will Apple and Google act?
Privacy and compliance are no longer optional.

Totally. Like I said we’ve seen it in a few jurisdictions already to get it out of stores. It will happen similarly in Germany.

Good point Colin. Restrictions on government devices are common, but removing an app from stores shows a stronger push for data protection. Even if people can still access it via the web, it highlights growing concerns around cross-border data use and compliance.

tbf, this happened in south korea, might even be the case in italy, and different governments do ban its use from their devices (but of course, not as bad as an app store removal). suspect that what germany requested will be complied, people can just use it via the web
