Sad news: Stamen (SF data + cartography studio, major influence in the data viz scene since 2000’s) is shutting down Map Stack.

Map Stack was a free service that let you create and host custom map tiles for Google Maps-style web maps. It never made money, so it’s no surprise Stamen wants to retire it. But damn, Map Stack was an amazing tech solution for designers.

I never used it for a project, but as a sandbox for testing visual styles for maps it was invaluable. They also contributed unique map base layers that gave it a very special feel.

Still, the web doesn't run on charity, so I totally get that they're shutting it down. Let's hope the code can be open sourced!
