The Lake That Burns

In Tanzania, there’s a lake where the water literally burns. Lake Natron is one of the most unusual bodies of water on Earth. Its high levels of alkaline minerals make the water incredibly caustic, with a pH as high as 12—enough to burn skin. The lake's red and orange hues come from the salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in the harsh environment. While the lake is deadly to most animals, flamingos have adapted to live here, with their nests built along its shores.
