Should Farcaster add a "staking" verification system? Please reply! Users can get "verified" badge by staking $10 USDC in a contract. The stake can be reclaimed at any time, but will only release after a delay (maybe 4-8 weeks). Verified users will get the following benefits: - Badge on profile. - Access to video uploads. - Show up higher in conversations. - A small boost in the rewards program. The goal is to make it harder for spammers to verify so that good humans on Farcaster have a better experience!

what pro badge is for, then? will be a new paid badge every next week? why 2 months delay for $10? looks too much what happens if I want to stake again after withdraw but still delayed why do you think 10 dollars will stoo anyone? (spammers and botnet owners are not poor and can afford it, money is not a real barrier, just one for the gallery and to say, hey, we do things, widely accepted by the industry but nit solving the problem)

I think there’s enough evidence to show $10 is not enough barrier - spammers spend $2-$3 per account on creating multiple spam accounts - clusters of lower quality accounts bought $120/yr pro subscription Also keeps increasing complexity for new users who aren’t spammers who now need to understand many different kinds of badges and verifications Not convinced ROI is +ve

A lot of spammers spent $120 to get a pro badge. I think this is a worthwhile experiment.

how does this make it harder for spammers to verify? how are we defining spammers?

Is the idea that spammers wouldn’t bother to stake? I think it’s likely they would.

First thought - sooo many verifications and badges 😅 What happens if an account is classified with a spam label (clear cut case, they’re clearing putting out LLM slop) but is staking to get more visibility?

very crypto native thing to do seems like this could be a hindrance to new users who want to get visibility and discovery

@cryptonjal @mvr I can’t get the whole thread to load so apologies if you’ve already seen this and commented but I assume you both have thoughts about this issue since you’ve looked at spam and pro account correlations deeply and have expertise to chime in here.

I think this idea would be interesting if there was slashing and the slashed stake were used to reward clients that onboard high quality users i.e. create a market for onboarding authentic users It’s totally worth it for a an inauthentic farmer to pay a small amount (even more so if they get it back) for an advantage But the value prop for a potential authentic user who isn’t farming rewards is unclear and staking is something that is hard to explain to someone who isn’t familiar with crypto - more confusion

Yeah but you should make it slashable. Stake $10. Do spammy behavior. Lose $10.

yes, worthwhile to keep thinking along these lines. two relevant data points as counterpoint: - a few thousand $120 pro subscriptions were purchased by sus accounts - rings of accounts have spent $2-3 multiple times to create new accounts and bump each other up on the leaderboard so, status quo is ~20% of top 100 is largely farming behaviour. while that’s still possible and incentives remain in place, this back and forth likely continues between farmers and the new barriers erected.

Users with existing pro will get additional listed benefits, correct? I think $10 is a very small amount, it should be higher than the amount person pays for subscription.
