this turned out to be a saga... Apple no longer supports Monterey, so i had to find a third-party download and verify the checksum. even still, it took multiple attempts to successfully create bootable install media (Monterey's installer has a bug that allows you to bypass MDM by turning off your wifi router *just* before it reboots into the fresh install) you then have to use recovery mode to disable a security setting before wiping the MDM profile and blocking Apple's MDM domains using /etc/hosts finally, you can upgrade to a newer version of macOS with Software Update, but Monterey is so old that this requires multiple updates π«
