“He actually wants to move the homeless into our subway stations”

On the topic of homelessness. If my mom didn’t have people around her to rescue her during certain episodes in her life, she would have been homeless a long time ago. 

When I was a teenager, she was experiencing a scary psychosis where she thought people were building a bomb in her backyard. She called 911 too many times and police took her to county jail for a week. This just exasperated her paranoia and fear. 

Had psychological social services been available, she ideally would have ended up in the hospital instead 

I love policies set up to help people in these situations. In the long run it’s better for everyone. 

Also fyi, Los Angeles County jail is the largest (or one of the largest) inadvertent psychiatric institutions in the country. It’s expensive and traumatizing exasperates mental health.
