What’s happened to Notion is a sad yet predictable scenario of a business getting very popular while trying to do too many things outside of its core product. The core product suffers as a result, and now those things they invested in that nobody outside of the core team asked for ( mail, calendar and ai) need to be paid for, hence the bait and switch.
It will be interesting to see if they walk some of this back or double down on this strategy. In 2025 there are other options that do what its core product does.(Obsidian and anytype come to mind). Ultimately they have the most to gain from Notion fumbling the ball here.

This is exactly why I'm so bullish on open protocols collaborating to win. 

Monolithic software that absorbs other features always leads to a bloated, unusable product. 

Open protocols simply result in disconnected, unusable products 🤣

BUT if we can get open protocols to collaborate we can create a feature rich UX that doesn't box people into a moat that does nothing but force them to eat inflating user costs and degrading consumer experience. 

By collaborating instead of consolidating, we actually create more opportunities for healthy competition in the end.
