“Are gargoyles always grotesque” I google. And that’s when I learn that gargoyles are functional waterspouts with a rep they did not earn. The monsters and the tortured? Grotesques is what they’re called. Guardians of godliness, Forever in His thrall. I thought I had a metaphor: that my past selves are gargoyles fixed in time. But now I’m really not so sure: Grotesque is hard to rhyme. Perhaps the past is better drawn as form and function too Foundations of the future me, A fitting cast and crew.
