no Volcker, microtransistors and personal computing would have reached a different economy of scale. unlikely, but the proliferation of digital scientific instrumentation may have still discovered fracking and natgas, so altogether the calculus for domestic manufacturing would be too good to offshore. intercity rail may have scaled differently, so suburban development may have scaled differently. immigration policy would have needed to expand further. mass media would have differentiated further, internet would be even more convenient, and neural networks would have been further explored. meanwhile, global commerce would go brrr as the reserve currency would be that much more attractive. although, all of this may still have never happened because history, like nature, is a fickle beast.

curious how you see immigration policy evolving differently in a world with even earlier AI + digital instrumentation. Would we see more global talent consolidation, or even earlier techno-nationalist responses?

it's hard to say, because the form was dramatically different and there were many inflection points at which the internet standards adapted to bottlenecks. I think it would have become much clearer, upon seeing nth-generation immigrant artistry as an export, that there was a renaissance to join. but the wild card is whether there would be enough proliferation to which phenomena like Bollywood and Nollywood would have effectively "franchised" out sociologically-based abundance stemming from Atoms for Peace. power law abides, so consolidation could be entertained as unavoidable, but there's many ways in which other countries could develop to sufficiently decentralize that consolidation. and I wonder what humanitarian benefit would have propagated from Nigeria, not to say that it hasn't to some degree, but it could have gone even further.
