Here is the first note of music I ever heard at an opera. (And also the first scene I ever saw.) I couldn’t believe my eyes. I’d went in expecting I wouldn’t like opera — but my friend Avi (an Orthodox Jew who is obsessed w Wagner) wanted me to go so bad that he bought my ticket. In my mind, I can still hear and see this opening note at will. It’s gets me into a state of meditation almost instantly — the perfect depiction of the birth of the universe.
